7th jumpthegap Roca International Design Contest


Jumpthegap is an International Design Contest promoted by Roca since 2004 with the collaboration of BCD Barcelona Design Centre that is looking for new, innovative and sustainable concepts for the bathroom space.

This seventh jumpthegap, aimed at creative people who think towards the future whilst designing today, is a very special edition as it coincides with Roca's 100th Anniversary celebration (1917-2017).

Patrik Schumacher, President

Born in Bonn, Germany, in 1961

He joined Zaha Hadid Architects in 1988 and he is leading the firm since Zaha Hadid’s passing in April 2016. He has been a co-author on most projects and was seminal in developing Zaha Hadid Architects to become a 400 strong global architecture and design brand.

In 1996 he founded the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association where he continues to teach. He is lecturing worldwide and recently held the John Portman Chair in Architecture at Harvard’s GSD. Over the last 20 years he has contributed over 100 articles to architectural journals and anthologies. In 2008 he coined the phrase Parametricism and has since published a series of manifestos promoting Parametricism as the new epochal style for the 21st century. In 2010/2012 he published his two-volume theoretical opus magnum “The Autopoiesis of Architecture”. He recently guest-edited the magazine AD - Parametricism 2.0 – setting architecture’s agenda for the 21st Century with a new emphasis on the societal relevance of parametricism.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1956

He holds a degree in Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

From 1981 to 1989, he was a founding associate and President of the Board of Directors at Ecotècnia S. Coop, and from 1989 to 1997 he served as Director of Vehicle Design for the Nissan European Technology Center of Barcelona (NETC-B).

He has been working with Roca Sanitario, SA since 1997, and is currently the Design and Innovation Director.

Born in Chisinau, USSR, in 1968

In 1985 became a student at Sverdlovsk Institute of Architecture (now – Urals State Academy of Architecture and Arts, Ekaterinburg). Holds a BSc in Design.

In 1991 was invited for practice by Professor Luigi Colani of Colani Design Bern AG, Switzerland.

In 1993 won a scholarship at Art Center of Design, Switzerland. Holds a BSc in Transportation Design.

1994- 2000 – Interiors Designer, CITROEN, Paris, France. Created interiors for the most commercially successful models: C3, C4 Coupe, C5 and C6.

2000 - 2007 год – Senior Interiors Designer, TOYOTA Europe Design Development, Nice, France. Participated in development of the most popular models: Yaris, Avensis, Auris, Corolla, RAV4, Celica and IQ, Managed development of the perspective models for years 2020-2025.

From 2007 года – President of the Centre of Industrial Design and Innovation ASTRAROSSA, Moscow, Russia.

Projects included: Restyling of GAZ SIBER-VOLGA, livery design and rolling out of Sukhoi SUPERJET-100, restyling and creating new cabin design for the whole product line-up of KAMAZ, design of interior of KAMOV-62 helicopter, design concept for the full size spaceship FEDERATION, Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games - Olympic Torch Design.

At the moment - CEO High Complexity Prototyping Centre KINETICA- NUST MISiS.

Teaches transportation design in leading colleges and art schools in USA, China, Europe and Russia.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1964

Isabel is the General Director of the BCD Barcelona Design Centre since 2000, an organization focused on economic and social value creation through design and its role in innovation and sustainable growth.

Her previous professional experience has provided her with the insight required to set successful and innovative strategies at the Centre. In 2006, she founded Barcelona Design Week.

She has been a member of the European Design Leadership Board appointed by the European Commission, and President of BEDA (Bureau of European Design Associations).

Currently, she is a member of the Steering Committee of the World Design Weeks Network.

Anjali Srinivasan

Born in Chennai, India, in 1978

She studied Accessories Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi and holds a BFA Cum Laude from the Alfred University in New York. 

She completed her graduate studies at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2007 with a keen interest in glass and digital media.

Her background in creative practice is the collaboration with traditional craft artisans in India since 1996, on research and design initiatives aimed at socio-economic empowerment.

She trained women in glass in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, supported by the American Association for University Women Educational Foundation, 2011-12 and she received the Swarovski Designer of the Future Award 2016.

Currently, she works out of India at the UAE and she is Creative Director of ChoChoMa Studios based in Dubai, a glass studio which processes focus on the development of ways to discover, access and restructure information held in a material or situation.

Born in Milan, Italy, in 1963

Graduated from the Istituto di Architettura di Venezia (1989). She has been a visiting professor at Harvard, Columbia and Barcelona ETSAB universities and in 2004 she received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. 

She has been part of juries around the world, e.g. the Prince of Asturias Awards and the Pritzker Prize. 

Her work received the Catalan National Prize in 2002, the RIBA Stirling Prize and the City of Barcelona Prize in 2005 and 2009, the National Spanish Prize in 2006, FAD Prizes in 2000, 2003 and 2007, the RIBA International “Best International Building of 2011” and the 2013 RIBA Jencks Award. 

She currently acts as Director of EMBT Miralles Tagliabue, founded in 1994 in collaboration with Enric Miralles, based in Barcelona and, since 2010, in Shanghai. She is also the director of the Enric Miralles Foundation.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1978

He has been living for the past decades in Vienna and London. By combining innovation and applied product logic, he comes up with unique design solutions in the area of consumer products, transportation products, furniture and design for the public space.

He holds a Master's degree from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (Mag. art. Industrial Design) and from the Royal College of Art in London (MA RCA in Design Products). 

He received the Red Dot: Best of the Best (2015), three-time winner of the International Bicycle Design Competition/Taiwan (2007, 2010, 2012), Austrian Climate Change Prize (2011) nomination, Global finalist for the James Dyson Award (2010), Red Dot Concept Award Winner/ category mobility (2009), Finalist Helen Hamlyn Design Award /UK (2009), Merit Award/Incheon International Design Prize in the category‚ green design / Korea (2009).

In 2013, he created the company VELLO bike in Vienna that specializes on the production and retail of innovative bicycles and other mobility products.

Born in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, in 1975

He was graduated from the Beijing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from Yale University. Currently he’s also a professor in the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

Ma has received many awards including the “Young Architects Award” by the Architectural League of New York on 2006, the “International Fellowship” by RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and the 2014 “Young Global Leaders (YGL)” by World Economic Forum. 

Ma is the founding principal of MAD Architects, a global architecture firm committed to develop futuristic yet sustainable, organic yet technologically advanced architectures based on contemporary interpretation of the eastern spirit of nature.

He was the President of the jury of the sixth edition of jumpthegap

Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1962

Bachelor of Science and Master in Business Administration (ESADE 1986), he has developed his professional career in the fields of marketing, business strategy and communication. 

For 10 years he was President of the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Bath Products (AGRUBAÑO). 

He has worked for various multinational companies in brands like Delial, Bayfresh, Baygon, Evax or Dodot, and since 1991 he works in Roca Sanitario, S.A., where he has developed various management positions. In 2008, he took over the Brand and Communication Direction of the company and currently he is also the Director of the Roca We Are Water Foundation.

Born in The Hague, The Netherlands, in 1967

Ovink served on President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and developed and led “Rebuild by Design” contest. Rebuild by Design was named in CNN’s 2013 top 10 of the most innovative ideas and was awarded the first-ever “Most Groundbreaking Federal Challenge or Prize Competition” by the US Federal Government.

He has served as Director General for Planning and Water Affairs and Director for National Spatial Planning for the Dutch Government.

Henk Ovink is currently the Special Envoy for International Water Affairs for the Kingdom of The Netherlands. As the Ambassador for Water, he is responsible for advocating water awareness around the world, focusing on building institutional capacity and building coalitions to address the world's biggest water challenges.

Born in Oxford, Great Britain, in 1973

Sophie has been working in the fields of sustainable design and circular economy, behaviour change and material process through her design agency, Thomas.Matthews ltd for over 19 years and as Director of Design for Useful Simple Projects. 

She has assisted global businesses and UK government organizations to define the role of designers within discussions around communication, waste streams, resource efficiency and circular economies, and has worked with major organizations on new models for circular business, internal communication of sustainable systems and external sustainability campaigns. 

In 2012, she founded The Great Recovery, a programme to build capacity and understanding of circular design in the materials supply chain, that ran through the RSA until 2016. She is a trustee of WRAP UK and the Useful Simple Trust, past trustee of the Design Council and was formally Director of Design and Circular Economy at the RSA.
