aim and theme of the contest

Jump the gap represents Roca’s support for the new generations of designers.

With this third year of its International Design Contest, Roca establishes a platform for talented young designers, architects and interior designers. “Jump the gap” offers the opportunity to create and design innovative solutions in bathroom and related products.

With more than 50 years of experience in comprehensive management of the application of design and innovation, we at Roca know that more than 50% of the products that we will use in 10 years have not yet been manufactured, much less designed. So what will they be like?

A large part of those products incorporate concepts and technologies that we may not even be able to imagine today... or maybe we can. “Jump the gap” starts from the assumption that young creatives design today whilst thinking about tomorrow; a tomorrow when the limitations of today will not apply and when new needs, architecture, technologies and products will emerge which will help us to improve people’s lives by bringing them more well-being, hygiene and comfort.

This third year of Roca International Design Contest is aimed at creative people who think towards the future whilst designing today.

These are designs that can bring forth their vision of conceptually innovative bathroom products and solutions: new products, new spaces and/or new uses and functions.

Jump the gap is a creative contest proposal that brings new and innovative concepts to the bathroom, understanding innovation as the anticipation of users’ new desires and needs, as well as (why not?) the transformation of dreams and desires into reality.

selection process

Pre-selection committee

At the end of March 2009, a pre-selection committee made up of representatives of the Roca Innovation Lab will select 30 projects from amongst the entries received, which will be presented to the jury.

jury

The jury will receive a “virtual dossier” with the 30 projects to judge.

The jury is made up of the following professionals:

  • President: John Pawson, architect, United Kingdom
  • Josep Congost, design manager of the Roca Innovation Lab, Spain
  • Carlos Ferrater, architect, Spain
  • Alfredo Häberli, designer, Switzerland
  • Chantal Hamaide, director of Intramuros magazine, France
  • Carlos Lamela, architect, Spain
  • Alberto Meda, designer, Italy
  • Héctor Serrano, designer, United Kingdom

The jury selection will be performed on-line during the month of April 2009.

prize

A single winning project will be chosen, which will receive a prize valued at €5,000. No account will be taken of the winner(s)’ tax or other obligations with respect to the prize.

The jury may make a selection of up to nine more projects, each of which will receive a diploma.

In order to make the result of the contest known to the appropriate public, Roca will present the winning project and the selected ones during 100% Design London in 2009 (United Kingdom). This is an excellent opportunity for creators to make themselves known to designers, architects and international companies.

An ambitious PR campaign will help to promote the winning project, the selected projects and their authors.

The author/s of the winning project will cooperate with Roca’s Design Department on the manufacture of a possible full-size mock-up or specific material to be used in presenting the project at 100% Design 2009.

The author/s of the winning project will be invited to attend the event, and Roca will cover expenses.

According to the characteristics of the winning project, its author may participate together with the Roca Innovation Lab in the development of the designed product.

intellectual and industrial property rights

Participants in the contest guarantee to Roca the originality of their proposals and the unhindered exercise of the intellectual and property rights over them.

All participants concede the rights for reproduction and publication of the projects presented (including the winner) for the maximum period established by law and for all countries in the world for the purpose of promotion in publications of general interest and/or specialised magazines, as well as in the websites, editions and publications of BCD, Barcelona Design Centre, and/or Roca, and also in the contest website.

All intellectual property rights, as well as possible industrial property rights over the projects presented, belong to their authors.

The winning competitor/s offer Roca an exclusive option for the purchase of the rights to exploit the intellectual property and industrial property rights over the work presented for a maximum period of two years from the date of the competition jury’s verdict. If this period expires without Roca’s having exercised its purchase option, the author/s of the winning project may freely dispose of intellectual and industrial property rights relating to it. In the event Roca exercises the aforementioned option, the author’s name must always be mentioned in connection with the design.

For Roca to acquire an exclusive option for the purchase of the rights to exploit the intellectual and industrial property rights relating to any other work presented, under the same conditions as those set out in the preceding paragraph, the company will first pay the author the sum of €2,000.

In the event that Roca decides to develop the design project for manufacture, this will be entrusted to the project’s author, who will receive fees to be mutually agreed.
