2010/2011 Edition

The fourth edition of the competition had more than 3,000 participants from 92 different countries. The jury was presided over by the designer Ron Arad and made up of other renowned professionals such as Gilda Bojardi, Josep Congost, Javier Mariscal, Tomek Rygalik, John Anthony Sahs and Marcel Wanders.

The winning project of this edition was a new shower concept, which allowed the user to choose between taking a shower outside or inside their home. The author was the Polish Michal Warykiewicz.

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1951

He was educated at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and later at the Architectural Association in London.

Ron Arad co-founded with Caroline Thorman both the design and production studio One Off in 1981 and later, in 1989, Ron Arad Associates architecture and design practice. In 2008 Ron Arad Architects was established alongside Ron Arad Associates.

From 1994 to 1999 he set up the Ron Arad Studio, design and production unit in Como, Italy. He was Professor of Design Product at the Royal College of Art in London up until 2009.

Ron Arad’s constant experimentation with the use of possibilities of materials such as steel, aluminum or polyamide and his radical re-conception of the form and structure of furniture has put him at the forefront of contemporary design.

Alongside his limited edition studio work, Arad designs for many leading international companies including Kartell, Vitra, Moroso, Fiam, Driade, Alessi, Cappellini, Cassina and Magis among others.

Ron Arad has exhibited at many major museums and galleries throughout the world. Recent and upcoming major retrospective solo shows include Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2008), MoMA New York (2009), the Barbican Centre, London (2010), the Stedelijk, Amsterdam (2011).He also has written several books.

From 1979 she started working for INTERNI magazine, promoting ideas linked to various productive themes and editorial initiatives of particular interest dealing with trade fairs, events, and exhibitions, for the home environment and contract furnishing. She is editor in chief of INTERNI since 1994.

INTERNI - International magazine of Interiors and Contemporary Design - is a monthly magazine with a circulation of 50.000. Launched in 1954 as the first Italian interior decoration magazine, INTERNI is now a major means of communication in the field of contemporary, Italian and international design and an essential work-tool for design lovers and operators. Since the first half of the nineties, in the sphere of the Magazines of the leading Italian Publishing Group AME Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. INTERNI is not only a magazine, as it has turned over time from magazine to an integrated communication system of parallel publications. INTERNI is also active as organizer and coordinator of Events and Shows meant to give designers, manufacturers and dealers the opportunity to meet and compare their mutual roles. INTERNI is the founder in 1990 of the Milan FuoriSalone phenomenon, coordinating it since then with the publication of the renowned Guida FuoriSalone.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1956

He holds a degree in Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

From 1981 to 1989, he was a founding associate and President of the Board of Directors at Ecotècnia S. Coop, and from 1989 to 1997 he served as Director of Vehicle Design for the Nissan European Technology Center of Barcelona (NETC-B).

He has been working with Roca Sanitario, SA since 1997, and is currently the Design and Innovation Director.

Born in Valencia, Spain, in 1950

Javier Mariscal is, first and foremost, an image creator who develops his work using all kinds of supports and disciplines. Furniture design, painting, sculpture, illustration, interior design, graphics design, landscape painting, gardening, horticulture and so on are all the object of his professional, vital activity.

Javier Mariscal’s works include Cobi, the mascot for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, a dog that changed all the rules. He also created Twipsy, the mascot for the 2000 Universal Exposition in Hannover and the cartoon series starring the mascot, shown in more than a hundred countries. He has collaborated with companies such as Memphis, Akaba, Nani Marquina, Vorwerk, Moroso, Alessi, Magis, Uno Design, Lalique and Phaidon.

Mariscal expresses himself using a personal language that is complex in intention and simple in its statements, innocent yet provocative that he uses to innovate, risk and communicate. He enjoys provoking the eyes that look at his works and creating complicity with them.

Born in Lodz, Poland, in 1976

He grew up during the social and economic transformation. His outlook on design is a unique voice reflected from his background. The analysis of the material culture and resourcefulness are in the heart of his thinking. Through design he strives to achieve stimulating and long-lasting functional results through minimal means, often by challenging the material properties, structure and by experimenting with new processes. The focus is on furniture, spaces and products. He studied Architecture at the Technical University of Lodz, and Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute in New York (1999 BA/Hons).

After his studies he worked with several design companies in New York City and the area - consulting for clients including Kodak, Polaroid, MTV, PerkinElmer, Dentsply, Uniliver, DuPont etc. In 2003 he came to the Royal College of Art for Post Graduate studies (2005 MA RCA). Then he established his own design practice in both London and Lodz and joined the RCA stuff as a Research Associate. He also teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (PG13.pl) and lectures internationally. His most recent work includes projects for DuPont/Corian, Moroso, Artek, Iker, Noti, ABR, Heal's and Ideal Standard.

Tomek Rygalik has been awarded with numerous prizes and awards and over the last few years his work has been exhibited in Berlin, Frankfurt, Lodz, London, Milan, Munich, New York, Tokyo, Poznan, Warsaw and Valencia and published internationally in hundreds of magazine articles and press features, including ICON, Interni, Wallpaper, Experimenta, Blueprint, New York Times and Financial Times.

John Anthony Sahs

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1968

Bachelor of Science Degree in Transportation Design at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California in 1992. Product Design Consultant for Ashcraft Design in Santa Monica, California, designing home consumer electronic products for major companies such as Harmon Kardon, JBL and Cybex. He moved to Tokyo in 1993 and was designing both car exteriors and interiors for Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio, Yokohama, Japan. In 2000, he was headhunted to join Nissan Global Design Center, Astugi, Japan and designed the GT-R Concept car interior which debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2001. For the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show, he designed the Serenity Show car, a luxury MPV proposal using artistic influences of Japanese DNA in the design language. From 2005, he was the exterior design team leader for the 3rd Generation Nissan Cube and his proposal was selected to go into production and was launched at the LA motor show in 2008. During this time he also designed the Denki Cube show car interior which made its first debut at the 2008 New York Motor Show.

He is currently the Creative Director and Founder of his own design studio: STUDIO-6Design

His work has been published in magazines, such as Esquire, Japan, Car Styling, Auto & Design, Cardesignnews.com, EVO, UK, and INTERSECTION.

Bron in Boxtel, The Netherlands, in 1963

Marcel Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands, and graduated cum laude by the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988.

In 1995 he opened his own studio Wanders Wonders, and in 2001 Marcel Wanders studio based in Amsterdam. His fame started with his iconic Knotted Chair, which he produced for Droog Design in 1996. He is now ubiquitous, designing for leading international companies such as B&B Italia, Puma, Swarovski, Bisazza, Poliform, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Flos, Google, Cappellini and Target. In 2001 Wanders co-founded the successful design label Moooi, of which he is the art director.

Additionally, Marcel Wanders works on architectural and interior design projects, such as the new Kameha Grand hotel in Bonn, the Mondrian South Beach hotel in Miami, the Villa Moda Flagship store in Bahrain, as well as private residences in Amsterdam, Mallorca and Jakarta. In 2005 he co-founded Lute Suites and has recently partnered with Philippe Starck’s and John Hitchcox’s design focused property development brand, yoo.

Many of Marcel Wanders' designs have been selected for the most important design collections and exhibitions in the world and feature in all leading magazines. In 2006 he was elected International Designer of the Year by Elle Decoration. Marcel Wanders’ first soloexhibition currently features in the Philadelphia Museum of Art: Daydreams.
