Patrik Schumacher, director of Zaha Hadid Architects and president of the jury of the 7th edition of jumpthegap®, gave a jumpthegap®(talk) on the 17th October 2017 within the framework of the award ceremony of the competition that took place at the Disseny Hub in Barcelona. In his talk, Schumacher presented his point of view on the current scenario and future perspectives of design and architecture. With the title “Tectonism. Engineering and Fabrication Logics as Stylistic Drivers”, he developed his theory in this architectural current.

Tectonism implies the stylistic elevation of engineering and manufacturing based on the search for shapes and the optimization of processes, and is the last stage of parametricism, a current developed in the late 1990s that rejects the homogenization and agglomeration of unrelated elements. Tectonism seeks maximum efficiency by drawing inspiration from nature to develop organic designs of great beauty and identity. The structure of the piece becomes stylistic and ornamental expression, as well as providing legibility in its entirety. Tectonism can also be applied to urban planning, architecture, industrial design, interior design and furniture.
