Interview with Ma Yansong - Founder & Principal Partner of MAD Architects
The jumpthegap® 7th edition’s member of the jury tells us about the most important aspects for him in an architectural design. He claims that a good design must connect with the environment it is designed for. A good design must talk about emotions and experiences. In his opinion, it must have a human side.
Ma Yansong
Ma Yansong is recognized as an important voice in the new generation of architects, he is the founder and principal partner of MAD Architects and member of the international jury of the seventh edition of jumpthegap®.
He graduated from the Beijing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from Yale University.
Ma has received many awards including the “Young Architects Award” by the Architectural League of New York in 2006, the “International Fellowship” by RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and the 2014 “Young Global Leaders (YGL)” by the World Economic Forum. He was selected as the main designer for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago, which made him the first Chinese architect to design an overseas culture landmark.
Parallel to his design practice, he has also been exploring with the public the cultural values of cities and architecture through domestic and international solo exhibitions, publications and art works. Currently he’s also a professor in the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.
Ma was the President of the jury of the sixth edition of jumpthegap®.
